The immediate past Chairman, Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), Mr. Folusho Phillips, has recently called for youth inclusion in policy making to enhance the nation’s governance.
This call was made at an interactive session of NESG Youths Integration Initiative (YII) in Lagos, which is aimed at fostering effective public-private sector engagement in socio-economic policy issues in Nigeria.
He said that government should ensure that the socio- economic environment was friendly to encourage youths to participate, especially at the private sector level.
According to him, the private sector is the major source of employment generation in the country and youths should showcase their talents in their chosen fields.
He also stated that those in the public sector should not see the private sector’s activities as competitive but should collaborate to ensure that the nation’s economy thrived.
The Director-General of NESG, Mr Laoye Jaiyeola, pointed that there was a need to continuously ensure open governance processes to achieve best practices.
Jaiyeola said that open governance would prepare the youth for leadership positions.
Chairperson, NESG Board Committee on Policy, Mrs Wonu Adetayo, added that it was imperative to have a public-private dialogue to understand the expectations of each sector. Adetayo said that having the dialogue would help both sectors to understand how to negotiate effectively without a party feeling cheated and that under the public-private dialogue, their concerns were related and should be synergized.
